As you have no doubt noticed, there has been no developement on Zonelog for some time now. This is due to lack of funds from registrations, quite probably because of the availability of unlock key generators that the hackers and crackers post on the net and/or very few people believe software is worth paying for these days.

I would like to thank those few that have registered my software over the last few years but I can no longer afford the time to develope and support this product any further.

This site, and the usable, but unregistered, copy of Zonelog will remain online for the time being until I decide where to go from here but the registration service will no longer be available as it costs more than I am receiving to maintain.

Further info regarding registration will be available on the Register page in due course.

There have been several reports of ZoneLog not importing logs after users upgraded to ZA Pro V3. This is usually a problem with ZAPv3 itself and not a bug in ZoneLog.
If you have installed ZA Pro V3 without first uninstalling the previous version then the logging to text file option does not always work even though it is enabled in ZAP settings.
You will have to uninstall ZAP then re-install ZAP to fix this problem.

There is a minor bug in ZoneLog that may tell you that ZA is not configured to log to a file even though it is when used with ZAPv3 but you can ignore this message as it is caused by a configuration change in the latest version of ZAP, there will be an updated version of ZoneLog available soon to fix this.

The ZoneLog mailing list appears to have been corrupted recently and many addresses have, unfortunately, been lost. If you didn't receive an email notifying you of the release of V1.03 but you were on the list before then please re-subscribe if you wish to receive future update notices. I apologise for the inconvenience and will attempt to keep a better backup in future.

1 August 2001
V1.03 released to fix the auto-import bug as well as another minor glitch in the import routine.

25 July 2001
There is a minor bug in the current version, 1.02, whereby if you have ZoneLog set to automatically import the ZA log at startup then it will not initially display the previous log entries if there are no new entries in the ZA log. This has no overall effect on the log or the importing but will mean that you will need to click a different display option (such as 'All Entries' or 'Today Only') to get the log to display.
A fixed version will be available soon when I'm sure there are no other bugs to fix.

26 May 2001
A recently introduced service has been brought to my attention that I thought may be of interest to ZA, and other firewall, users. myNetWatchman provides a service whereby users can report their suspect IP addresses which are added to its database, when several submissions of the same address are collected they are brought together and an email is sent off to the relevant host for further investigation. myNetWatchman then keeps a record of the reports and any resolutions resulting from their enquiries, all the details of which can be viewed from the web site.
Full details can be found on their site, I'd recommend reading their Vision page for details of what the service provides.

Don't worry, I haven't abandoned you all since releasing the final shareware version. As they say, no news is good news, and I'm happy to say that that's how it is. There are a couple of minor issues which will be dealt with in the next release, V1.01, due in the next few weeks along with some further enhancements such as an increase in speed when listing the log entries (as much as 40% faster).

13 April 2001
ZoneLog is finally out of beta. The final version is now available for download, no more beta expiry dates and, hopefully, no more bugs. The software is fully functional with no time limit but it is shareware so if you find it to be a useful tool then please consider registering, the price is minimal.

It has recently been brought to my attention that there is a known problem with W2K and software firewalls that could well be the cause of the instability that some of you are experiencing.
You can find the full details in the MS KnowledgeBase, article Q264794, a summary extract of which follows:
You may receive a "Stop" error message in Tcpip.sys if you have firewall, proxy, or similar software installed on your computer. This problem can occur if Windows 2000 frees a bad Raw Internet Protocol (IP) packet and if there is software installed on the computer that uses the firewall hook.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, [...] contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix.

23 March 2001
I'm testing a 3rd party control to try to fix the known problem with DNS Lookups, mainly with W2K users. I have created a small test application with a trial version of the necessary library and would appreciate the co-operation of any user that would be willing to test it out. If you suffer from the problem where ZoneLog causes your machine to lock up permanently, randomly reboot after a lookup, or the lookup constantly returns no data found then please send me an email at support@zonelog.co.uk and I will provide further information. Due to the fact that the control is a trial version this test is limited to a few weeks as of today.
Please note that this test program will not do anything to help ZoneLog at this time and it will not magically resolve unresolved addresses, it is simply a proof of concept test.

17 March 2001
Due to overwhelming response from a recent GRC newsletter a few problems have arisen regarding ZoneLog. The most important of which is the overloading of one of the sites that ZoneLog links to for WHOIS lookups, SamSpade.org. ZoneLog comes with 3 preset WHOIS sites and I would urge that users try to use one of the other WHOIS sites, configured from Tools/Options/WHOIS Settings.
Secondly, users are unnecessarily sending abuse reports to the SamSpade host due to the fact that the traceroute feature sends data back to the user which ZoneAlarm blocks and logs. Any hits from IP addresses 206.117.161.80 or 206.117.161.81 are not attacks and should be ignored as this is the address for SamSpade.org

Released V0.46 update to correct several bugs and improve user awareness of how to use the information. Further details in the History page.

14 March 2001
Recent events involving the author of similar log analysis software and Steve Gibson, author of the ShieldsUP port scanning service at grc.com, have led to rumours that ZoneLog will block, hide, ignore, or otherwise interfere with the logging of certain IP addresses.
This is not true!
The only change will be that ZoneLog will be pre-loaded with addresses of known test sites so that if the user attempts to send an abuse report to the host ISP they will first be warned that this is a known test site and that they should check the details of the log entries before firing off their email.

On a related note, the current beta version, 0.45, has introduced a bug with the Address Tagging feature. Any attempt to Tag a new address will result in an error. This will be fixed in the next release.
